Apparently, the reason why many of us can't post more than 1500 bytes
of entry has to do with resent DoS attacks. From LJ's Status page:
Additionally, we've also been dealing with an increased
amount of malicious traffic recently. In order to ensure LiveJournal's
overall availability, we've take a couple of measures to minimize the
impact of this traffic. Unfortunately, this has the side effect of
preventing some users from posting long entries or comments. We're
working on resolving this problem as soon as we can, and we apologize
for the frustration it's causing.

So, if you have a paid, plus, or permanent account and are having
issues with making posts over 1500 bytes, you can get around this
issue by posting via email, while the good people at LJ fix this mess.

You can set up mobile/email post settings here:

Instructions for usage are found here: http://www.livejournal.com/manage/emailpost.bml?mode=help

I recommend using Gmail to make your posts because they don't
automatically add signatures, which can screw up/eat your posts. If
you don't have a Gmail account, I will happily give you an invite to
your current email address. If you have your own signature for your
email, I recommend turning it off for posting.

Note: This won't help the issue with not being able to
post comments to others longer than 150 or so words.

HTML markup seems to work in these posts. So do LJ-Cut tags.
Just for shits and giggles )

However, it seems that I can not EDIT these emailed posts without
encountering the same bloody issue I had trying to post them to begin
with. I really hope LJ figures out a better way to block DoS attacks
because this is just ridiculous.

So, yeah. A clunky solution, but it's been working for people who have
LJ blocked at work for years.
