I originally posted this in another forum but because I think it is good knowledge for people to have I am posting it here.

I had my tongue pierced for about 6 years before I took it out. I took it out because it was ruining my gums over time, causing the rear lower ones to recede.  It had also caused 2 cracked molars (which now have crowns) and numerous little chips along my front teeth. Metal or plastic doesn't matter, your mouth isn't designed to deal with that over long periods of time. I'd also check ANY piercing in, or near your mouth for wear on your teeth and gums (i.e. Labret, Lip, or Monroe). Good oral hygiene can only prevent so much and a 'little' gum recession can lead to big problems later on down the road.

Honestly, the tongue piercing was never meant for long periods of time. It was originally done temporarily as a part of rituals that invoked altered states of consciousness. (Yay endorphines!) It was only with the modern tribalism movement and popularization of body piercings in the 90's that this was adapted for long term wear. Unfortunately this means that we are only just beginning to hear about how much damage this type of piercing can cause over time.

I really wish I would have known when I got mine. It might not have stopped me, but I at least could have started saving for the thousands in dental work. :-(

If you are still determined to get it be aware that this is something that can happen. Some other tips if you insist on getting this piercing. )
I hope all of this helps, one way or another. I cant advise getting a tongue piercing but it is always best to have as much knowledge as possible so there are no surprises. After all, everyone has a right to do what they want with their body.
